A centuries-old Japanese tile game is making waves in Philadelphia. The Philly Mah-Jawn Mah-jongg Club, founded in 2019 and led by Mike Lee, focuses on the Japanese Riichi version of mah-jongg at its Old City clubhouse. Riichi is known for being both competitive and fun, featuring authentic tables imported from Japan that draw in curious players.
“My goal for this space is for people to come and play mah-jongg. We’re lucky to have volunteers who teach and help out. We have 15 to 20 members who meet weekly, along with new visitors learning the game,” Lee shared. The club offers a screen-free, social experience that is easy for beginners but also has depth for serious players.
The Riichi variant uses 136 tiles, with 34 types and four of each. It focuses on skill, strategy, and luck, highlighting hand construction, discards, and situational awareness. The club welcomes players of all levels, provides lessons, and encourages participation in professional mah-jongg tournaments.
You can find the clubhouse at Second and Chestnut streets in Old City, Philadelphia. For more details about lessons, check out the club’s website.
