Notable events on June 13 include W. Hayward winning the Belmont Stakes in 1889 on the horse Eric, clocking in at 2:47:25. In 1895, J.H. Taylor defended his title at the British Open golf tournament, while Harry Vardon claimed his first of six Open titles in 1896. Christy Mathewson made history in 1905 with his second no-hitter against the Chicago Cubs and won his 300th game in 1912.
