This Day in Top 40 History: June 22  

Listening to your favorite music can be a great way to relax, but knowing the stories behind the songs and artists can deepen your appreciation. Artists who reach the Top 40 often influence others, and June 22 has seen many significant releases across various genres.

On this day, several milestone songs were released. In 1971, Joni Mitchell released her fourth album, *Blue*, which included hits that climbed to No. 15 on the Billboard 200 and No. 3 in the U.K. In 1979, Neil Young & Crazy Horse dropped *Rust Never Sleeps*, featuring tracks that made it into the Top 20 in both the U.S. and U.K. Bryan Adams scored his first No. 1 hit with “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” in 1985, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks. Elton John’s *The One* came out in 1992, reaching No. 8 on the Billboard 200 and No. 10 in the U.K., featuring songs with Eric Clapton. In 2008, Coldplay made history with their digital-only No. 1 hit in the U.K., which later won a GRAMMY for Song of the Year.

June 22 also marks important cultural moments. Todd Rundgren was born in 1948 and married Michele Gray on his 50th birthday. Cyndi Lauper, born in 1953, hit No. 1 with “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” in 1984. Derek Forbes, a founding member of Simple Minds, was born in 1956 and recently published his autobiography. In 1991, N.W.A. released *Efil4zaggin*, which quickly reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. In 2020, twenty one pilots released a unique video for their Top 40 single, showcasing their creative style.
