For Nickelback, worldwide fame comes with sold-out arenas, devoted fans, and a few perks. But as the Canadian rock band recently explained, being recognized almost everywhere can also turn ordinary errands into unexpected encounters and sometimes make home improvements a whole lot more expensive.
In a new interview with Ben Jones, all four members of Nickelback opened up about what fame means to them. Frontman Chad Kroeger, guitarist Ryan Peake, drummer Daniel Adair, and bassist Mike Kroeger offered different perspectives on life in one of the world’s most recognizable rock bands, revealing both the advantages and frustrations of their success.
Chad Kroeger Can’t Escape the Spotlight
As Nickelback’s lead vocalist and most recognizable member, Chad Kroeger doesn’t enjoy the same anonymity as his bandmates.
During the interview, Kroeger explained that he finds it difficult to switch off his celebrity status, even when he tries to blend into the crowd.
He recalled a recent shopping trip when he wore a hat and assumed nobody would recognize him. However, the person helping him immediately struck up a conversation about the band’s upcoming tour dates. Kroeger joked that he sometimes convinces himself people won’t recognize him, only to discover that his fame follows him wherever he goes.
For the singer, those encounters capture the contradictory nature of celebrity. Recognition can make life more enjoyable, but it can also make simple activities feel less private.
Ryan Peake Enjoys a Little More Anonymity
While Kroeger regularly deals with the attention that comes with being the band’s frontman, Peake said he can still disappear from public view more easily.
Peake credited the band’s success with giving him the freedom to go off the grid when he wants to. He also acknowledged that Kroeger shoulders much of the attention because fans immediately associate the singer with Nickelback.
Still, Peake recently experienced an unexpected reminder of his own celebrity status at a Slayer concert.
A fellow concertgoer recognized him and approached him to say hello. Peake admitted that he hadn’t expected anyone to identify him at the show. The encounter offered a funny reminder that even when Nickelback’s members aren’t performing onstage, their musical reputation can follow them into other corners of the rock world.
Daniel Adair Jokes About the Cost of Being Famous
For Adair, fame can become particularly frustrating when it’s time to hire a contractor.
Adair explained that service providers sometimes raise their prices after discovering that a client plays in a famous rock band. He joked that contractors suddenly seem to find an extra 15% to add to their estimates.
Kroeger took the joke a step further, suggesting that some people effectively add an extra zero once they realize they’re working on a celebrity’s home.
Mike Kroeger Has a Different Take on Nickelback’s Fame
Mike Kroeger offered perhaps the most amusingly understated perspective of the group.
He argued that Nickelback is famous, but that doesn’t necessarily mean every member experiences celebrity in the same way. In his view, Chad is the truly recognizable one.
Living in Los Angeles also helps Mike keep a low profile. He pointed out that plenty of people in the city are trying to avoid attention themselves, making it easier to go about his day without attracting notice.
Nickelback Prepare for Their Next Global Chapter
Nickelback is currently preparing to release their eleventh studio album, Everything Under The Sun, on October 30 through Virgin Music Group.
The band has also announced its 2027 Everything Under The Sun tour, which will take the group across North America, Europe, and Australia.
