Pearl Jam and Jack White feature on ‘New York Times’ readers’ poll of the best living American songwriters (digital edition only)

Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Jack White are among the artists featured in a new readers’ choice list of the greatest living American songwriters. This list comes from a poll conducted by a major publication, which previously released a list of 30 top songwriters based on input from music insiders and critics.

After receiving mixed reactions from fans, the publication decided to let readers weigh in. They invited fans to vote, resulting in over 25,000 ballots and nearly 12,000 unique choices. The final list includes 100 songwriters, many of whom were not on the original list.

Notable names that made the readers’ choice include R.E.M. at #25, Jack White at #49, Pearl Jam at #52, Beck at #56, and Trent Reznor at #83. Other recognized songwriters include Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day, The National, Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish and Finneas, Noah Kahan, Phoebe Bridgers, Justin Vernon, Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters, Stephen Malkmus from Pavement, and Dave Matthews. This new list highlights the diverse range of talent that fans appreciate in American music today.
