This Day in Top 40 History: June 2

June 2 is a significant day in Top 40 music history, marked by many chart-topping hits and memorable moments. This day has seen some of the biggest names in pop music achieve great success and make cultural impacts.

In 1973, Paul McCartney and Wings made headlines by holding the No. 1 spots on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200 charts. Their hit “My Love” topped the Hot 100, while the album Red Rose Speedway reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Five years later, in 1978, Bruce Springsteen released his fourth studio album, Darkness on the Edge of Town, which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and included hits like “Badlands.”

In 1986, Queen released their twelfth studio album, A Kind of Magic. While it just missed the Top 40 in the U.S., it soared to No. 1 in the U.K. and spent 63 weeks on the charts. Fast forward to 2017, Dua Lipa launched her self-titled debut album, which featured Miguel. It peaked at No. 3 in the U.K. and included the hit “New Rules,” reaching No. 1 in the U.K. and No. 6 in the U.S.

June 2 has also been a day of cultural reflection. In 2016, David Bowie’s ChangesOneBowie entered the U.K. vinyl charts, highlighting the vinyl revival. In 2020, the music industry observed “Blackout Tuesday” in response to George Floyd’s death, with artists pausing to support the Black community. In 2022, Harry Styles announced he would donate his fee from an Apple campaign to the International Rescue Committee.

Overall, June 2 is a day filled with important releases and moments that shape the music world.
