The Inaugural March of ‘The Black Parade’: My Chemical Romance Philadelphia Flashback Interview

One of the most exciting tours this summer is happening this Friday, August 15, 2025, in Philadelphia. My Chemical Romance, the beloved band from New Jersey, is back to celebrate their iconic 2006 album, The Black Parade. They will perform the album in full, accompanied by a spectacular stage show.

The band first played The Black Parade in Philadelphia on February 25, 2007, at The Liacouras Center on Temple University’s campus. Gerard Way, the band’s lead singer, expressed his excitement about returning to the city. He recalled, “It’s the first place we actually traveled to and stayed overnight as a band.”

The Black Parade is often described as a “goth version of Sgt. Pepper,” and Gerard agrees, calling it an ambitious concept album. It tells the story of “The Patient” as he navigates his mental journey. Despite its dark themes, Gerard believes the album leaves listeners with a positive message about the desire to live.

The lead single, “Welcome To The Black Parade,” is a fan favorite. It starts with a simple piano melody and builds into a powerful rock anthem featuring a full marching band. Gerard shared that this song was the hardest to create, evolving through many versions before reaching its final form.

Live performances are all about the experience, and Gerard draws inspiration from rock legends like Alice Cooper. In a fun twist, Alice Cooper will open for My Chemical Romance at the Philly show.

Gerard and Pierre also touched on the band’s history, including their connection to Frank Sinatra’s label and how the events of 9/11 influenced their formation. They even managed to get Liza Minnelli to perform on the album. It’s sure to be a memorable night for fans!
