Pink Floyd Changes Album Cover to Black in Celebration of ‘Wish You Were Here’ 50th Anniversary

This week, streaming platforms showcased black squares with white text, replacing Pink Floyd’s famous album cover. This change hints at the upcoming 50th anniversary of *Wish You Were Here*. Each square features a simple black background with a description of the original artwork. For *Wish You Were Here*, the text reads, “Two men in suits shaking hands; one man is on fire.”

This move is reminiscent of how the band originally sold the album, wrapped in black plastic to keep the artwork a secret until fans opened it. *Wish You Were Here* was released on September 12, 1975.

After acquiring Pink Floyd’s catalog last October, Sony Music has been tight-lipped about their plans, with only one release so far: *Pink Floyd at Pompeii — MCMLXXII*, available on CD, vinyl, and film. Many believe that an announcement for a 50th anniversary reissue of *Wish You Were Here* is just a matter of time. This album pays tribute to Syd Barrett, the band’s singer and guitarist who passed away in 2006, and it explores themes of absence and loss.

On the band’s website, a black circle labeled “coming soon” is front and center. Fans can sign up for updates from Pink Floyd HQ. Online discussions are buzzing with speculation about what’s next, with many hoping for a Dolby Atmos remaster or a special edition.

Bassist Roger Waters ranks *Wish You Were Here* among his top four Pink Floyd albums. He noted that classic albums from their peak years, like *The Dark Side of the Moon* and *The Wall*, have truly stood the test of time. Keep an eye out for more news as the anniversary approaches!
