Queen has been named the UK’s most played rock act of the 21st century, according to a new PPL chart released for National Album Day. The legendary band, featuring Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon, has racked up over 400 million seconds of airplay on radio and TV—equivalent to 12.5 years of nonstop listening!
Their most played song during this time is “A Kind Of Magic,” followed by hits like “I Want To Break Free,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” “Radio Ga Ga,” and “Somebody To Love.” PPL, which licenses music for UK radio, TV, and public spaces, created this chart using detailed airplay data from broadcasters across the country.
The announcement comes just in time for National Album Day on October 18, an event celebrating music that’s now in its eighth year, organized by BPI and ERA in partnership with BBC Radio 2. To mark the occasion, Queen will reissue a special 50th anniversary vinyl edition of their iconic 1975 album, A Night At The Opera.
Following Queen on the list of the UK’s Top 10 most played rock acts are David Bowie, U2, Oasis, Fleetwood Mac, Stereophonics, The Rolling Stones, The Police, The Killers, and Kings of Leon.
Brian May expressed his excitement, saying, “Astounding news! It’s amazing to top a 21st-century list, especially since most of our major works were done in the 20th century. Big thanks to all our fans!”
