June is an exciting month for sports fans, featuring the Stanley Cup Finals, NBA Finals, the MLB season, NBA Draft, US Open, Wimbledon, Belmont Stakes, and various Grand Prix events. Over the years, June 11 has seen many memorable moments in sports history.

In 1898, Willie Simms rode Sly Fox to victory in the Preakness Stakes with a time of 1:49:75. Five years later, golfer Harry Vardon won his fourth British Open, beating his brother Tom. In 1904, Bob Wicker pitched nine hitless innings against the New York Giants. Sir Barton made history in 1919 by winning the Belmont Stakes, becoming the first horse to claim the American Triple Crown.

The year 1927 was significant for Babe Ruth, who hit his 19th and 20th home runs of the season, setting a record with 60 homers. In 1938, Johnny Vander Meer pitched a no-hitter against the Boston Bees, while tennis star Don Budge won the French Open. That same year, Ralph Guldahl defended his U.S. Open title.

Ben Hogan triumphed at the U.S. Open in 1950, just 16 months after a serious car accident. Eddie Arcaro won the Belmont Stakes in 1955, and in 1961, Roger Maris hit his 19th and 20th home runs on his way to 61.

In 1982, Larry Holmes defeated Gerry Cooney in a heavyweight boxing match. Von Hayes made MLB history in 1985 by hitting two home runs in the first inning.
