Bears Walk Overhead at Philadelphia Zoo’s All-New Carey Bear Country

Philadelphia Zoo just opened Carey Bear Country, and it’s a showstopper. The big highlight is the Gould & Potter Crossing — a 60-foot elevated trail that runs 16 feet above the ground. Visitors can watch bears stroll overhead on the Zoo’s first Zoo360 trail for bears.

The $25 million habitat is one of the most advanced in the country. It gives the bears 60% more space, adds a third habitat, and copies wild environments with digging pits, heated pools, water features, and 14-foot climbing structures. There are indoor and outdoor dens for breeding and cub care, plus cave-like glass viewing spots that bring fans close to the action.

Current residents include Turbo, a 15-year-old male Andean bear who builds elaborate beds and smashes bones for marrow; Alba, an 11-year-old female Andean bear who’s smart and curious; and Bhalu, a 13-year-old sloth bear who loves enrichment toys and is dad to five cubs. The exhibit features interactive displays about Andean and sloth bears, their threats — like habitat loss and poaching — and the Zoo’s conservation work.

Zoo leaders say the elevated crossing boosts the bears’ lives and gives visitors a wow moment while connecting them to wildlife conservation. If you’re into big performances and up-close animal moments, Carey Bear Country delivers.
