This Day in Rock History: May 1

The rock music genre has seen a lot of change, and May 1 has given us some unforgettable moments. This day has celebrated the birth of famous rock musicians like Johnny Colt from Lynyrd Skynyrd and D’arcy Wretzky of The Smashing Pumpkins. It’s also marked the release of hit songs and amazing performances that made waves in rock history.

In 1976, Led Zeppelin released their seventh studio album, *Presence*, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard albums chart for two weeks. Despite this success, it was their lowest-selling album, and they only played two tracks from it live. Fast forward to 1993, when George Michael, Queen, and Lisa Stansfield topped the UK singles chart with *Five Live*, an album featuring performances from the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. It held the No. 1 spot for three weeks, with all proceeds going to the Mercury Phoenix Trust charity. Then in 2005, Rob Thomas made history when his album *Something to Be* debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, becoming the first male solo artist from a rock or pop group to achieve this.

May 1 has also seen cultural milestones. In 1955, record executive Leonard Chess signed Chuck Berry to Chess Records after a recommendation from Muddy Waters. In 1967, Elvis Presley married Priscilla Beaulieu in Las Vegas. Elton John made history in 1979 by performing in Israel, becoming the first Western rock star to do so.

Notable recordings include Johnny Cash releasing “I Walk the Line” in 1956, which topped the Billboard Country chart. In 1966, The Beatles played their last scheduled live concert in the U.K. with a brief 15-minute set. Finally, in 1975, The Rolling Stones performed “Brown Sugar” on a flatbed truck in New York City, announcing their Tour of the Americas.
