This Day in Sports History: June 17

June is an exciting month for sports fans, featuring the Stanley Cup Finals, NBA Finals, the middle of the MLB season, the NBA Draft, the US Open, Wimbledon, Belmont Stakes, and various Grand Prix events. Over the years, June 17 has seen many memorable moments in sports history.

In 1880, John M. Ward pitched the second perfect game in MLB history. Fast forward to 1901, when Willie Anderson claimed his first U.S. Open Men’s golf title. In 1911, Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman won the women’s singles title at the U.S. Open tennis championships. Cricket legend Don Bradman scored 131 in a Test match against England in 1930.

The year 1939 was significant for tennis, with Simonne Mathieu and Don McNeill winning the women’s and men’s singles titles at the French Championships, respectively. In 1943, Joe Cronin hit two three-run pinch-hit home runs, while in 1953, the Red Sox scored 17 runs in a single inning.

Rocky Marciano defended his heavyweight title in 1954, and in 1960, Ted Williams hit his 500th career home run. The U.S. Open saw Gene Littler win his only major title in 1961, and in 1962, Brazil triumphed over Czechoslovakia to win the FIFA World Cup.

Fast forward to 1994, when the New York Rangers celebrated their Stanley Cup win with a parade, and O.J. Simpson’s slow-speed chase interrupted live sports broadcasts. In 2008, the Boston Celtics secured their 17th NBA Championship, and in 2010, the Lakers defended their title against the Celtics.

Most recently, in 2023, Shohei Ohtani hit his 150th career home run, adding to the excitement of June sports history.
