This Day in Sports History: May 7

May is an exciting month for sports fans. The NBA and NHL playoffs are in full swing, Major League Baseball is underway, and there are major events like the Preakness Stakes, the PGA Championship, the FA Cup Final, and the French Open in tennis. Additionally, several Grand Prix races take place.

May 7 has seen many memorable moments in sports history. In 1917, Babe Ruth led the Boston Red Sox to a 1-0 victory over the Washington Senators, outpitching Walter Johnson. Just five years later, in 1922, Jesse Barnes of the New York Giants threw a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies. That same year, Belgium defeated the Netherlands 2-1 in a friendly soccer match.

In 1938, Eddie Arcaro won the Kentucky Derby on Lawrin, marking the first of his five Derby wins. Fast forward to 1955, Bill Shoemaker rode Swaps to victory in the Derby with a time of 2:01.8. In 1959, a record crowd of 93,103 watched the New York Yankees beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 in an exhibition game.

Michael Jordan made history in 1989 with “The Shot,” giving the Bulls a playoff win over the Cavaliers. In 1994, the eighth-seeded Denver Nuggets shocked the top-seeded Seattle SuperSonics in the playoffs, marking a historic upset. More recently, in 2022, jockey Sonny Leon rode 80-1 longshot Rich Strike to a stunning victory in the Kentucky Derby.

These moments remind us of the thrill and excitement that sports bring to our lives.
