Analyzing Three Days Grace: A Comparison of the Band’s Sound and Style Before and After Adam Gontier’s Departure

When a band loses a key member, especially the lead singer and a founder, it’s a tough situation. However, Three Days Grace is one of those rare bands that has managed to keep going strong, no matter who is at the front. In January 2025, they celebrated their 19th No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart with their new single, “Apologies.” This marked their second consecutive No. 1 hit, following “Mayday,” which topped the charts for five weeks.

What’s interesting about “Apologies” and “Mayday” is that they feature both the band’s original vocalist, Adam Gontier, and their current singer, Matt Walst. Gontier left the band in 2013, and Walst, who previously played in My Darkest Days, took over. Both bands share a similar hard rock sound that emerged in the 2000s, but Three Days Grace has been around since 1992, while My Darkest Days hit the scene later with their big break in 2010.

Musically, Three Days Grace maintains a consistent sound, whether it’s from the Gontier era, the Walst era, or tracks featuring both singers. Bringing Walst on board was a smart choice, as his style fits perfectly with the band’s identity.

Now, Three Days Grace is just one No. 1 hit away from tying for the most in Mainstream Rock Airplay history. Having two vocalists seems to be a winning strategy for them, and there’s no sign they’ll return to a single frontman. With their tradition of delivering relatable hard rock songs, this dual-vocal approach is clearly working well for the band.
