This Day in Top 40 History: March 25

March 25 is a significant date in Top 40 music history, marked by major events like Las Vegas residencies and concert cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are some key highlights from this day:

In 2003, Celine Dion kicked off her Las Vegas residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Known for her hit “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic, her success inspired other artists like Adele and Britney Spears to follow suit.

Also in 2003, Linkin Park released their album Meteora, which became their first No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The album was praised for its production and lyrics, with tracks like “Somewhere I Belong” topping the Alternative Airplay chart and breaking into the Top 20 on the Hot 100.

In 2011, Britney Spears released her seventh studio album, Femme Fatale. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and included hits like “Till the World Ends” and “Hold It Against Me,” both reaching the Top Five on the Hot 100.

In 2015, Sam Smith’s song “Stay With Me” hit No. 1 in the U.K. and spent five weeks in the Top 40. At the 2015 GRAMMY Awards, his album In the Lonely Hour won Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Fast forward to 2024, and at 65 years old, Madonna performed at the American Airlines Center in Dallas for her Celebration Tour, proving that a true star can still draw crowds after decades in the industry.

March 25 has also seen cultural milestones. Aretha Franklin was born in 1945, later earning the title “Queen of Soul” with 17 Top 10 hits. Elton John, born in 1947, has over 20 Top 10 albums and has sold more than 300 million records worldwide. Lastly, in 1968, The Monkees aired their final episode, a band created during the Beatlemania era.
