This Day in Top 40 History: June 3

June 3 has been a significant date in pop music history, marked by chart-topping albums, classic singles, and memorable concerts. Here are some key events that shaped this day in pop music.

In 1995, Canadian singer-songwriter Bryan Adams hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks with his song from the movie Don Juan DeMarco, showcasing his signature emotive style. Two years later, Faith No More released their sixth studio album, Album of the Year. Although it just missed the U.S. Top 40, it reached No. 7 in the U.K. and produced a Top 20 hit there.

In 2016, The Kills dropped their fifth album, Ash & Ice, featuring tracks that, while not making the Top 40, still landed in the U.K. Top 20. The year 2000 was a milestone for Britney Spears, as her second album, Oops!… I Did It Again, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, solidifying her status as a pop icon.

Beyond chart success, June 3 has seen culturally significant moments. In 1964, Ringo Starr fell ill just before The Beatles’ world tour, leading to session drummer Jimmie Nicol stepping in for the first 11 days. In 1967, Aretha Franklin’s version of “Respect” topped the Billboard Hot 100, becoming an anthem for the feminist and civil rights movements. Bob Marley and the Wailers released their iconic album Exodus in 1977, blending reggae with pop to reach a wider audience.

In 2001, Tom Petty married Dana York in Las Vegas, later having a second ceremony in Malibu. Finally, in 2019, Jay-Z became the first hip-hop star to join the billionaires’ club, thanks to his diverse investments beyond music.
