Airbnb is changing its checkout rules, giving travelers a break from some of the cleaning tasks hosts have traditionally required before guests leave a rental.
The new policy takes effect November 20, 2026, for reservations made on or after that date. Under the new guidelines, hosts can no longer require guests to complete chores that take significant time or effort.
Which Airbnb Checkout Chores Are No Longer Allowed?
The new policy prohibits hosts from requiring guests to strip beds, wash and put away dishes, start a load of laundry, or take trash off the property.
However, guests may still be asked to complete smaller tasks before leaving. For example, hosts can ask visitors to place dishes in the sink, gather used towels, and more.
Hosts can also ask guests to turn off air conditioning and other listed amenities when checking out. Certain exceptions may apply in special circumstances, such as wildlife precautions or water conservation requirements.
Airbnb Wants Clearer Rules for Guests
Along with limiting checkout chores, Airbnb is standardizing how hosts communicate house rules. The platform has introduced seven categories covering expectations such as quiet hours, smoking, pets, events, maximum overnight guests, and locking up at checkout.
Hosts must disclose their house rules and any reasonable requests in their listings at the time of booking. They cannot add new checkout requirements after a reservation has been made.
Airbnb also plans to flag requests that violate its policy and give hosts chance to address the issue or appeal. Listings with unresolved problems could display an alert to potential guests.
The company also prohibits hosts from imposing their own fines, pointing to its AirCover program for eligible property damage claims.
What the New Airbnb Rules Mean for Travelers
The changes could make checking out of vacation rentals simpler, particularly for travelers who have paid cleaning fees but were still expected to complete lengthy chore lists.
The updated policy aims to make expectations clearer before guests book, helping travelers understand what is required during their stay and when they leave.
For anyone planning an Airbnb trip, it is still a good idea to review the listing’s house rules before booking. The new policy limits certain cleaning demands. Guests remain responsible for treating the property respectfully and following the rules that Airbnb permits.
