This Day in Sports History: April 19

April is an exciting month for sports fans. It features NBA and NHL playoffs, the start of MLB, The Masters, the NCAA Basketball title game, the NFL Draft, and some Grand Prix events. April 19 has seen many memorable moments in sports history.

In 1897, John J. McDermott won the first Boston Marathon with a time of 2:55:10. This marathon was inspired by the success of the 1896 Summer Olympics. In 1900, the Philadelphia Phillies set a record for the highest-scoring opening game, beating the Braves 19-17 in 10 innings.

Fast forward to 1944, when the Boston Yanks selected Angelo Bertelli first in the NFL Draft. In 1947, Maurice Richard of the Montreal Canadiens was named MVP, and the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup against the Canadiens, marking the first all-Canadian final since 1935.

In 1965, the Boston Celtics made history by having five players score over 20 points in a single NBA Finals game. The 1980s brought us memorable boxing matches, with Michael Spinks defeating Larry Holmes in 1986 and Evander Holyfield beating George Foreman in 1991.

More recent highlights include Rafael Nadal winning his fifth straight Monte Carlo Masters title in 2009 and Patrick Marleau breaking Gordie Howe’s NHL record for most games played in 2021.
