Returning to the starting point after a year: Artists involved in the event discuss the landmark performance

Sunday marks one year since the Back to the Beginning concert in Birmingham. The show took place on July 5, 2025, and built up to the final live performance by the original Black Sabbath lineup with Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy died on July 22, 2025.

Artists who played that night shared what the show meant to them. Tool’s Maynard James Keenan said, “In the beginning was Black Sabbath, and then everything else fits neatly below when it comes to metal. They were it. So, it was an honor.”

Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell called the night one of the most important things he’d ever been part of. He said it was special that Ozzy could have that moment and that they were invited to celebrate him and the band.

Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale said everyone felt the same awe. She added that modern rock wouldn’t be what it is without Ozzy and Black Sabbath, and called being part of the show a tremendous honor.

Mastodon’s Brann Dailor remembered playing “Supernaut” as one of the biggest moments of his life. He said he was moved by the outpouring of love, respect, and community focused on Ozzy and Sabbath.

Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe said a show like that will never happen again for him. He called it a magic thing and said he’s very grateful to have been part of it.
