June is an exciting month for sports fans, featuring the Stanley Cup Finals, NBA Finals, the middle of the MLB season, the NBA Draft, the US Open, Wimbledon, Belmont Stakes, and various Grand Prix events. Over the years, June 18 has seen many memorable moments in sports history. Here are some highlights.

In 1898, Juliette Atkinson defended her title in women’s singles tennis at the U.S. National Championships, while Fred Herd won the U.S. Open Golf Championship. Fast forward to 1915, Jerome Travers, a four-time U.S. Amateur champion, claimed his only Open title. In 1938, Babe Ruth joined the Brooklyn Dodgers as a coach.

Joe Louis defended his heavyweight title for the 18th time in 1941, knocking out Billy Conn in the 13th round. Ewell Blackwell pitched a no-hitter against the Boston Braves in 1947. The Cleveland Indians made history in 1950 by scoring 14 runs in the first inning against the Philadelphia Athletics.

In 1960, Arnold Palmer made a stunning comeback at the U.S. Open, overcoming a seven-stroke deficit to win. The year 1972 saw West Germany defeat the Soviet Union 3-0 in the UEFA European Championship Final.

Fred Lynn had an incredible game in 1975 with 10 RBIs, and in 1979, Sri Lanka upset India in the Cricket World Cup. Tiger Woods made headlines in 2000 by winning his first U.S. Open by a record 15 strokes.

More recently, in 2017, Pakistan triumphed over India in the ICC Men’s Cricket Championship, and Brooks Koepka won his first major at the U.S. Open. June 18 has truly been a day filled with unforgettable sports moments.
